DAY TRIP - NYERERE NATIONAL PARK

OVERVIEW

Nyerere National Park formally known as Selous Game Reserve is Africa’s largest and oldest game reserve. The Selous’ beauty of the park is matched by the quality of a safari with its widest diversity of safari activities, Nyerere Park covers 50,000 square km and its among the largest protected area in Africa and relatively undisturbed by humans, Selous is rich in elephant, cheetah, giraffe, hippos and crocodile, and many other species. You’ll start from Dar es Salaam at 4:30 AM!

Itinerary

Day 1: Zanzibar to Nyerere

We meet you at the airport at 6:30 AM, and then fly from Zanzibar to Nyerere National Park (duration of 50 minutes). Our guide will pick you up at the Mtemere Airstrip with a lunch box and water, from where you then start a game drive in Nyerere National Park. Should you have your own drinks (like wine), we will keep them cold in our car’s fridge.

During the afternoon, you will take lunch and continue with the game drive until 4:00 PM, then take a flight at 4:30 PM from Nyerere to Zanzibar.

DAY 2: SELOUS/NYERERE-DAR ES SALAAM

After early breakfast, depart for a full day game drive in the Park, exploring the game in the surrounding areas. Animals, including elephants, giraffes, lions, buffalos, zebras and even the rare African wild dogs, are common. Picnic lunch in the mid-day, later on in late afternoon will begin to drive back to Dar es Salaam for the drop off at the place of your choice.

FAQ

The dry season of July through October is the best time of year for the greatest overall concentrations of game in this park when wildlife congregates around the lakes. However, do not underestimate this park at any other time outside the rainy season of April & May as game viewing is very good in various areas throughout the year. Nyerere is quite safe to visit. Crime against visitors is rare in Tanzania and the little crime that does occur mostly happens in major urban centers, similar to the rest of the world. Camps and Lodges in Nyerere National Park have night guards who patrol the property and keep the vicinity safe. During the day, your Safari Driver-Guides would typically guide you on how to approach the wildlife in the safest way, either on your game drive or your walking safari.
